It seems to be raining babies at the moment. I know it’s just that stage of life that a lot of my friends are in, a few years ago we didn’t have a spare weekend for all the weddings, but goodness…the babies! The most recent additions have happened to be three sweet baby girls – Audrey, Sparrow and Alexa.
What’s a girl to do with all the new babies…but crochet! My hooks have been busy as usual, whipping up hats and booties and little cardigans. I rifled through my *ahem* substantial yarn stash to find some ruby red wool for Audrey, after her mum was a little overwhelmed by all the pink that does inevitably come with the arrival of a baby girl. My very favourite crochet cardigan pattern (which I usually make without the sleeves) plus a quick and easy hat with matching Mary Jane style booties = Miss Audrey sorted. Before you say it, I know, I know…the Mary Jane style booties are just hopeless to keep on (and are terrible to try and take a photo of without a model it seems…) but they do look pretty cute when they do stay on for those 0.25 seconds. And sometimes cute wins…
Next up: Miss Sparrow…who incidentally is also an Audrey too. Huh… Sparrow is the third girl in her family, so again I steered clear of the pink overload, this time opting for a soft mint, ivory and wooden button details. Little Sparrow probably won’t be fitting these for awhile as she’s a wee premmie, but can I just say how much I love these booties? Adorable. I was so happy with how Sparrow’s hat and booties turned out, considering I almost always just make hat patterns up as I go! The bootie pattern can be found here, I’ll definitely be making them again.
Miss Alexa – the first born for my dear friend Olivia and her husband. Liv is the girliest girl I know, I couldn’t think of anyone more suited to have a daughter – Alexa is going to be such a little princess! So…cue the pink. Another sleeveless cardigan, this time in contrasting pinks, and with a little earflap hat to match. I’m really hoping Alexa gets some wear out of these as she lives in hot and dry northern Victoria, so I made them a bit big for when the weather cools off in Autumn…
That cardigan pattern I think I could make in my sleep! It’s just a consistent winner, for both baby gifts and for Eleanor as I increase the hook size and/or yarn weight. When I was experimenting with the pattern to make Eleanor’s grey cardigan I was pleasantly surprised to find that if I made the yoke in a worsted weight yarn using a 5.5mm hook it looked almost big enough for a teenager! Brilliant. I have a feeling that pattern will be made again and again for years and years…
Is it raining babies in your circle of friends too?
All girls? All boys?
Made any new baby gifts lately?

Your crochet always looks so beautiful! I’m definitely still in the beginners stage.

Oh I still very much consider myself a beginner! I think because I’m self-taught I just assume I’m not very ‘professional’ about it?! Thank you though xxx
