A few thousand weaners, two dogs and a pine tree…

1/3 :: A weekend spent in the dusty, hot yards helping Matt with his weaners. Some people think we’re mad but we genuinely love working in the yards together, it’s easy and comfortable and we like it. It’s the most time I get to spend with him these days too. Working on a bigger place now I miss it just being me and him and ‘our’ cattle.

4/5 :: The sidekicks. Tessa usually comes everywhere with us on the farm, but at this time of year she is banished to stay in the ute due to all the grass seeds. We’ve never really lived somewhere with her that they’ve been so bad, she’s had a few issues with them in her paws and ears. Bella – quickly becoming a real team member and, dare I say it, one of the best dogs we’ve ever had. The gorgeous untouchable Lily obviously excluded!

6 :: Oh the snails…they’re everywhere, all over fence posts and our verandah and my garden! I’ve never seen so many snails, my poor herbs and lettuces have been decimated.

7 :: Early summer begins. The bane of poor Tessa’s existence. It’s tough being a spaniel on a farm.

8/9 :: We finally went a’hunting! Pine trees are quite hard to come by in these parts, not like at home. But we got a tip off about a little pine patch on a nearby road. Is it illegal to take Christmas trees off roadsides? I think it is. Hmmm. Matt assured me ‘Carlton’ was both sides of the road so it was basically our own property. I usually don’t like our front door (it could be so much better, oh the things I would do if this were our house!) but the sight of a wreath and a pine tree ready to come inside makes me smile. Fa la la la laaaaaaa!

I love the times when I go with my farmer out on a field too, it feels so good when you are seeing the result of your work knowing you did it together. Beautiful photos too!

snails, another thing we don’t get up here. Gee its dried off quick down there. Your weaners are a bit chubby though :). I like your front door. Why don’t you just get a small tin of paint (with permission I guess) and paint it a colour you love?! Sunny yellow? turquoise? its the small things that make the difference.

Yes I don’t think owners would mind…but I feel I’d need to do the windows as well which are the same delightful green. And the prep of old wooden sash windows makes me shudder… We’ve never had snails like this in Victoria, strange South Australian thing? Country has actually held on quite well, hasn’t been too bad this year, last year was a very long summer. Our weaners are happy little chubbers 🙂

…and these were the small ‘not-fit-for-public-don’t-put-them-on-your-blog’ weaners Matt said!
