Almost two years ago now, before we were married, when we were living at ‘home’ in Gippsland, I was trawling eBay and spotted a gorgeous Moran couch, the perfect shape I have always loved, real feather down cushions, beautifully upholstered with a removable cover (floral not really my taste, but can be easily re-upholstered), well made…and, wait for it…a ten minute drive from our sleepy country town! For those not living in rural areas, let me just tell you that this never happens. Ever. Only problem being that we had no need for Beautiful Couch. But I wouldn’t let a detail like that get between me and my Beautiful Couch.
As you can imagine, one thing lead to another…I bid, I won, I took my what-I-thought-to-be-a-large-car to collect Beautiful Couch after work.
Beautiful Couch wouldn’t fit in back of what-I-thought-to-be-a-large-car.
Of course I hadn’t told Matt that I had purchased Beautiful Couch.
Cue panic, then realisation that I really was snookered.
I made the call.
“Hiiiii…um, no I’m in Yarragon…don’t get mad…but can I borrow your ute?”
Beautiful Couch lived in my cramped sewing room for awhile – I didn’t dare complain, lest I get the ‘I told you so’ stares. We have two perfectly good (and expensive and well-chosen) couches serving a purpose in our lounge room. No need for a third. Poor Beautiful Couch lived in Matt’s aunty and uncle’s house whilst we traveled on our honeymoon in 2012, I simply couldn’t bear to put her in storage, I much preferred her to be being used and loved rather than run the risk of rats making a home in her pretty curves. When we were picking and choosing furniture to give away, sell, leave back home in Gippsland, Matt eyed Beautiful Couch suspiciously…I could feel the ‘I told you so’ stares coming.
But now Beautiful Couch has a new home in our spare bedroom. Thank goodness the bedrooms here in the farmhouse are flipping huge – no way could we have had three couches in the tiny cottage we once lived in (or the other house we were going to potentially move into here).
And so Beautiful Couch has become…well, part of the furniture. One day I’ll get her re-upholstered, and I just know I’ll have the perfect spot for her. One day. In the meantime, our guests get to enjoy her…as well as stacks of folded unfolded washing on any given day.
Do you make random furniture purchases without telling your significant other?
Smuggle them home in your car?
Got a penchant for beautifully shaped couches?

It’s absolutely beautiful, so glad it has a home! Love the fabric too!

Love the couch and even though floral is probably not the current trend it is soft and very vintage and I too would want to keep it. Squatters chairs are so famous and my Nanna had one at her place and us grand kids (5 of them) used to fight to get to be the first one on it when we arrived there. You cheeky little bargain hunter. Love the curves.

I can’t say I make random or secret funature purchases especially as the place we are living would barely fit another piece not meaning that I don’t see and wish for … especially timber furnature or old style cupboards and hutches with leadlighting.I did make plant puchases the other day though but that is a little off topic other than the impulse part. It is a nice looking couch and I think even the floral print could grow on me 😉

oh I’ve seen many a beautiful and bargain priced bit of furniture – that I really have no where to put, and so refrained from purchase. I was THIS CLOSE to buying two solid timber squatter chairs in the towers (just two hours away!) for $80 but saw sense at the last minute…but oh I regret it now.

Squatters chairs … I would have found it hard to leave them to … one day I’ll get to sit out on a veranda taking in a rural scene on a squatters chair.

Ahem…pardon my ignorance…but what on earth is a squatters chair? Off to google…
