Crocheted Blankets: A Boy Option, A Girl Option

July 6, 2016 by Emma

Crocheted Baby Blankets, A Girl Version, A Boy Version | She Sows Seeds 1

In my recent nesting behaviour, I sorted through all the baby blankets. All the baby blankets. We seem to have a lot – mainly from my sisters girls (so quite girly), a few unisex which I bought when pregnant with Eleanor in case we had a boy, and the handmade gems from both my mum and myself. Turns out we don’t need baby blankets anytime soon, we’re sorted.

But…

…I of course couldn’t resist making this new arrival his or her very own blanket. A specially made blanket made just for them, not for Eleanor or any other baby. Perhaps completely unnecessary, but it was something I wanted to do throughout this pregnancy. During my pregnancy with Eleanor I made several crocheted blankets – a few unisex (which she still sleeps with most nights) and a boy option and a girl option. The boy option has since been passed on to a friend’s baby boy, and the girl version will no doubt be used again if we have another baby of the pink variety, but I always look at it and remember Eleanor as a baby, or making it whilst pregnant with Eleanor. New boy/girl options were in order.

A simple granny stitch blanket would do the trick for these boy/girl options, and I already had some yummy yarn in my stash in a fun raspberry and soft pale pink – Cleckheaton’s Superfine Merino. I ordered some contrasting white to make the girl colour way, and then for the baby boy version opted for a navy, sky blue and stone coloured yarn.

The blankets were absolutely labours of love, taking me most of my pregnancy to complete (and just in the nick of time, of course!) But I’m so glad I did it, and not another unisex blanket, which is all very nice and convenient but I knew once our baby arrived I would be wishing I’d made it especially pink or especially blue.

Now, the blankets await their new owner patiently, draped over the bassinet in our bedroom, also awaiting its newest occupant. Whether the pink or the blue blanket is needed, I know that they will be well loved and practically used to wrap our Winter babe in mummy’s handmade love. We just need a baby, boy or girl, pink or blue…
