This was meant to be the ‘look-at-my-yummy-hot-cross-buns’ smug little pre-Easter blog post…but let’s not talk about the great bun epic failure that happened here yesterday. Sigh.
Over the years I’ve trialed several different hot cross bun recipes, this one seemed a real winner, how disappointing. I remember my first ever attempt in our first farmhouse kitchen, where a possum lived in the old wood stove, the drug squad had kicked in the back door and we showered in the backyard with an old camp shower hung from a tree due to no shower inside. Good times. But damn it, I baked hot cross buns! And they were horrendous. Horrendous little blobby rock cakes with a vague hint at spice or dried fruit. Barely edible really.
So I gave up on the buns, then about every second year I think “Of course I should be making hot cross buns!” and dip my toe into bun making again. And am quickly reminded of my past efforts. Matt’s aunty is the unequivocal Hot Cross Bun Queen – no bun can compete with Jenni’s buns, so why bother? That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Stupid buns.
But chocolate little treats – that I can do! I’ve had this little silicone egg mould thingy in my baking-bits-and-bobs-box for yonks, I probably got it at a $2 shop or the supermarket, who knows. I know the idea is to make two egg halves and stick them together, but I quite liked the idea of using the pearl sugar glittery edible stuff (also found in the baking-bits-and-bobs-box) on the tops of the half-egg. Basic stuff really, melt down some white cooking chocolate, few drops of food colouring, sprinkle with pearl sugar or hundreds and thousands or whatever you like. Five little Easter bunnies nieces will be pretty happy about glittery pink eggs I think.
I then got a bit more creative and crushed up some Oreo’s, stirred through some melted white chocolate and made some little cookies and cream ones for Matt, because he loves cookies and cream anything (who doesn’t?) You could put whatever you like through the chocolate, sort of like rocky road, or even pop a caramel lolly in the middle so it’s like a caramel egg. Mmmmm.
Have you failed at hot cross buns too? Please tell me yes.
Cookies and cream fan?
Got much planned for Easter? If you’re traveling, stay safe on the roads – it’s hectic out there!

Ahh I think my Aunt made them one year and they turned out well but she couldn’t keep up with the speed we ate them so that was given up. I love your chocs they look so pretty and I am sure your nieces will love them. I do like cookies and cream and well if it has the word chocolate I am in. I haven’t made chocolates for Easter since I was a kid, I thought about it this you and decided no, lazy hey.

I’ve tried hot cross buns – they looked ok, and tasted ok….. but were not fluffy enough. Not worth the effort! π LOVE your little pastel eggs – yum to cookies and cream! Brad and I are heading back down to Vic today to his parents farm for easter. π

I fail at most baking, not only buns. Last time I followed a recipe to the letter and that were NOT banana muffins that were coming out of the oven… Your chocolate treats look great though!

Not a bun maker. Frankly yeast cookery scares me!! We have a day trip planned to the local Super special secret fishing hole and other than that I hope, very little planned.

Emma, I really hope it wasn’t my recipe that steered you wrong π I’d be happy to trouble shoot in any way if it was.
Emma says
Oh goodness no! Yours looks super easy and delicious…although so do the ones I’ve used in the past. I should really give yours a go and let you know how I went! E x

Oh so glad it wasn’t mine π Always happy to help troubleshoot. I know how frustrating it is when things like that don’t work out!

I love these treats. They look so lovely and pretty. Perfect for little nieces. This is definitely going in my bookmarks and pinterest. Thank you.
Not much here for Easter, just egg hunting and a nice bbq with the family.

Your little choccy treats look delicious. My kids would go nuts for them.
Shame about your buns π We always make them and love them in our house. I’ve been making this recipe for many years and it always works for me (if you’re brave enough to ever try again :)!

I too fail at hot cross buns. They are never light or fluffy! So this year I am not even bothering & I’m just going to buy them π
I am going to try making some chocolates. In this months Donna Hay is a recipe for dulche de leche so I’m going to make that & fill the eggs with it- yum! ( well hopefully yum).
Have a great Easter Emma x

Oooooo sounds good! I’ve had a quick flick through the Donna Hay but need to sit down and study further. Happy Easter!
