After leaving home Saturday morning with no real destination in mind (the best kind of weekend trip in my books) we found ourselves in Victor Harbor. Dinner involved a gorgeous heritage building, an open fire, warm flatbread with hummus and tapenade, fresh calamari and lemon aioli, slow braised pork cheek in red wine with fennel on garlic mash, a glass of local cab sav or three. The Tigers had a convincing win. Life was good.
We found the farmers market a’buzz in the crisp but sunny morning, perused the stalls, bought some violas and herbs to plant at home, ate goat sausage rolls in the winter wind. The iconic Victor Harbor jetty was a must, as was meeting the trusty Clydesdales who pull the historic tram car. We wandered through shops and cafes, admired beautiful handcrafted wooden toys and crafty books, had morning tea at a German cake shop, all very South Australian of us.
Meandering home we stopped in Strathalbyn – a little village with far too many exciting looking treasure troves for the brief visit we had. I’ll be back. We drove out to the mouth of the mighty Murray River, stopping on the way to spot whales and smile at the little stone cottages overlooking the sea. I haven’t been to the Fleurieu in summer, but I am assuming winter has the advantage of a much slower pace. Yes, the wind off the Southern Ocean is biting, the cool air numbed my fingers and nose, but there’s something to be said for huddling with a hot drink in mittened hands and overlooking the shipwrecked coastline.
Back home again at ‘Carlton’ we lit the fire, greeted an overexcited Tessa, had a lazy Sunday dinner hardly comparable to our decadent Saturday feast. Today I have herbs and violas to plant in the sunshine. Hope your weekend was warm and toasty!

I spent a lot of time in my teen years in Victor and today it remains one of my favourite places in the world, even if it growing at a cracking pace.
