Mookah Studio

November 27, 2013 by Emma

I love Inverloch. Have I mentioned that? I really love Inverloch. From visiting our nearest beach as a child, I’ve seen this sleepy seaside village blossom into somewhat of a hidden gem of South Gippsland. Now, my husband’s parents call ‘Invy’ home, and so do we to some extent.

As property prices rose in the past ten years and people have ventured further than the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island for holidays, Inverloch has sprouted trendy cafes, a wine bar, a great organics and health food shop, vintage furniture shops and some pretty retail spaces. Mookah Studio was always a must-visit destination for me when visiting Invy – a small space tucked into the industrial estate, only ‘real’ locals knew about it. Last week when I was strolling A’Beckett street I spied that Mookah was all grown up! Their new store, just opened three weeks ago, is in the heart of Inverloch, and is gorgeous. The next day I had to go back, camera in hand and bloggers hat on, to be able to share this with you…

Mookah is itself an independent design label, featuring beautiful creations of tea towels, ottomans, cushions, beanbags, skirts, all from screen printed linens and classic denims. The fabric is also available to buy to make your own creations, featuring simple earthy tones with a definite native Australian vibe, which sits so perfectly in Mookah’s coastal home. The black and linen tea towel framed and hung in the new store is pretty high on my Christmas wish list – I almost walked away with it!

A self-described ‘curated collective of independent designers’, Mookah is also home to several other creatives who showcase their wares in the new retail space. From one-of-a-kind lightboxes to wooden rings, glass hanging ornaments to kids toys, beautiful silk dresses and statement jewelry – my friend Amy and I were in retail nirvana. So much pretty! It’s not often I enter a store and want to literally buy everything. Mookah’s new store has been so beautifully curated, the visual merchandising is perfection, the owners clearly not only have a fantastic eye for detail and trends, but are pretty passionate about what they do. Congratulations Mookah Studio – all grown up now in the main street of sleepy Inverloch!

What a unique, cool shop. Love the fabrics and is that a very cool lamp made out of vines on a metal base?
