Pikininnie Harem Pants

September 11, 2013 by Emma

* Apinun! I’m thawing my Winter bones in tropical Papua New Guinea at the moment, so here is a post I prepared for you whilst I’m in holiday mode. Now where is my mojito…

When we first met our friends who we’re staying with in Papua New Guinea, Lulu was just three months old. All chubby cheeks and blonde ringlets, just like her mum (ok, minus the chubby cheeks, sorry Ange). We’ve not only watched Lulu grow up into a totally spunky (almost) six year old, we’ve welcomed Sassy and Pepe to the crew. These guys are some of our dearest friends, all five of them.

So, it’d be rude not to bring the girls presents from Australia right? Right. An essential clothing item for these kids living in a third world tropical environment are long sleeves and pants, light weight fabrics and preferably elastic cuffs – all in an effort to keep the mosquitoes at bay and therefore avoid a most unwelcome bout of malaria. Ick.

I made these harem pants for the girls using this pattern, it uses a bit more fabric to get that ultra-blousey wide leg look, but they are just so. damn. cool! I love how they turned out. Just like I love how these girls are turning out. They’re pretty rad.

IMG_9985I couldn’t find any long sleeved tops to match the pants in my mad last minute packing frenzy (and dash to town to see what our meagre Target Country had on offer) so went with a short puff sleeve option instead, embellished with a bit of the fabric and these tropical fashionistas are kitted out in some pretty cute outfits, if I do say so myself. I grabbed Lulu and Sassy for an impromptu photo shoot in their new duds, unfortunately Penelope was asleep so missed the fun, and the only photo I have of her in her harem pants is from Ange’s instagram. I let Lulu do whatever pose she liked…ummmm?!

I’m also loving the girls co-ordinating without being all matchy-matchy – the horror of my sister and I in matching acid wash denim pinafores circa 1989 still haunts me…let’s not have a repeat of dressing non-twin siblings like twins shall we? Yes, good.
