There was a time where I endeavored to sew/crochet/make all the children’s Christmas gifts. This time will now forever be known as ‘before-Motherhood’! Ha! Now I’ll be lucky to make Eleanor any handmade goodies for her Santa sack, let alone our growing brood of nieces and nephews (at last count there were 11 kids to buy for at Christmas – sheesh!) But…I did manage to put these together for our niece Maddie and Eleanor’s second cousin Rufus, who are the same age and I thought would most appreciate imaginary play toys…
I had great intentions of actually having these done for Maddie’s birthday in October…uh, yeah that didn’t happen. Any project I aim to have finished these days, I need to add two months! Exhibit A would be these toys…Exhibit B would be this blog post featuring Christmas gifts…in February.
Anywho, I used several (free) patterns I found perusing Ravelry and affordable but still nice wool from good old Spotlight. In future I think I’d like to make them out of a cotton, maybe I’ll make some for Eleanor. Here are the links to the patterns if you’d like to make some yourself…
Cupcake
Cake slice
Macaroons
Ice-cream
Doughnut
Everyone sees me make things like this and is like “Oh you should sell them!” Ha – well, they actually take a really long time, I’d have to charge a small fortune to make it worth my time. Plus, I just like making them as gifts or for little special people, they’re not exactly my favourite thing to make on a mass production scale!
Little Madeleine received a set of ‘sweets’ to have some tea parties with, while Rufus got some fruit and veg to put in his shopping basket or play mini-chef with. Despite Matt questioning what the eggplant was (clearly an eggplant!) I was pretty chuffed with how these turned out. The key to making pretend play items like this look really true to life is in the detail, it can be fiddly, but it does make all the difference.
Did you make any Christmas gifts this year for the kiddies?
Got some tea parties and pretend play going down at your house?
Totally think that the eggplant is very eggplant-esque? Yeah, me too.

These are super cute and I am sure lots of fun to play with. Told my Mum who gave my niece a tea set for her birthday to get onto it as she would love them 😉 I made homemade chutney and jam for everyone and got a calendar of photos from the year done for them too.

I have been thinking about making some felt play food lately. I should get started.

i love these! Not sure I’m talented enough to make them but I’d love to try.
I made a noughts & crosses set for my best friends son. It was so easy but he loved it & I so did I. It’ll be on the list to make for my little once they are big enough.
