Sunday Driving

September 21, 2015 by Emma

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Spring is just The Business. Especially when it turns it on for a weekend of weather like we just enjoyed – perfect for pottering about in the garden, lunching in the backyard under our big old chestnut tree and slow drives around the farm. On Sunday morning, after the particular husband scrubbed the house from top to toe, we went for a mosey about the paddocks with Grandad – up hill and down dale, showing Eleanor some parts of the farm she’d never been before, along the creek, discussing where irrigator lanes could go or which way runs of potatoes could (or should) be dug, years of experience coming from Grandad and young enthusiasm and optimism coming from Matt.

It’s planting time at the moment, the brilliant weather on the weekend had the boys out there going up and back, up and back on the nearby hills. No such thing as Sunday’s for farmers. We like to plant after the last frost has been…but of course that is anyone’s guess really, and we can sometimes get a late frost in September/October just to throw a spanner in the works. Such is farming. Always a lot of rolling of dice, crossing of fingers and hoping for the best. But by the looks of it (hopefully) our Winter is well and truly behind us, and before we know it the hills will be full of potato plants emerging and flowering.

Back at the sheds Eleanor thought she’d better get her tractor hours up in the big rig – ready to help with next years planting or perhaps this seasons harvest. Keep at it Blossom, one day you’ll reach the pedals! Simple Sunday’s like yesterday’s are unfortunately few and far between sometimes as we’re often busy, always busy. So lovely to have a weekend of un-busyness, to sit and have lunch as a little family in our backyard. A Sunday well spent most certainly brings a week of content.

Beautiful … your spring is so beautiful. Mr Sparky’s mate is a spud farmer on the Atherton Tablelands and his spuds are looking good apparently. Keep enjoying that nice spring weather and the change of the seasons.

It looks like a perfect day – My Sunday was spent hauling furniture and equipment with some of my colleagues for work… It might be the first weekend of the holidays, but teachers always seem to do extra. Boy am I sore today!
