The Gift of Crochet

September 30, 2013 by Emma

Birthday season has descended upon my circle of friends and family. I like to try and make gifts, and since I’ve learnt to crochet loads of ideas are popping into my mind – bags and cardigans and toys and hats. Here’s what has been on my hook lately…

Untitled-51Some organic cotton cloths for Amy. I had bought this yarn for no particular reason, many moons ago I thought I should make some cloths for Amy with it, last week I re-remembered that thought and got hooking – three different stitches for three different colours. I can see many more of these in my future for gifts.

IMG_0158 IMG_0159Amy’s youngest Savannah turns one this week. Unfortunately we’re here and they’re there, so we won’t be making the birthday and naming day celebrations. I adapted my favourite pattern a bit and whipped Miss Savvy up a little short sleeved cardigan. Perfect for a South Gippsland summer.

IMG_0160 IMG_0162 My friends’ eldest Luella turned six last week, and while we were in Papua New Guinea she put in her request for a crocheted-something from Aunty Em. Living in a tropical climate I didn’t think a crocheted cardigan was quite going to cut it…or a beanie…or mittens, but this colourful shrug fits the bill, and will suit spunky Lulu down to the ground.

Amy’s cloths made using this yarn. Light pink cloth is a basic shell stitch. White cloth is a half-double crochet and single crochet in one stitch, skip the next stitch. Dark pink cloth is a double crochet one row, single crochet the next.

Savannah’s cardigan made using this pattern (without the sleeves) and a yarn from my local craft store.

Luella’s shrug made using this pattern and the same yarn as I used for Savannah’s cardigan.
