The Lawn Lady

October 31, 2013 by Emma

Not much will please me more than the sight of a well maintained lawn. Freshly cut. Weed free. Green, green, green. Here at ‘Carlton’ we have quite the expanse of lawn. We always have had in homes we’ve lived in, but here I think might be the biggest.

And also like other farms we’ve lived on, there is a communal ride-on mower. Except this mighty beast has been out of action since before we went to Papua New Guinea. So, basically forever ago. This week it’s back – back! I promptly set about taming our jungle, pottering about on the mower, up and back, back and up… I find it very therapautic, methodical and relaxing. Lots of thoughts to be had whilst mowing the lawn. My mum loves mowing the lawn. Her best ideas come from it, and I tend to agree. It’s head clearing activity.

It takes me a good two or three hours to mow the whole lawn here, but the effort this time was done by both myself and Matt (ok mostly Matt due to his perfectionist ways) over a few evenings and afternoons here and there. It was epic. The grass over yonder side required the tractor with the slasher to deal with it.

Our lawn is hardly well maintained or manicured. The key of course is to mow it regularly and lightly, neither of which we do when just obtaining the mower involves liaising with others who also lay claim to the mower, loading it on the trailer, unloading it, blah blah blah. But it’s green, for now (although not looking quite as green just after it’s cut), I’m hoping we can keep it that way for a little while longer. Keeping a green lawn around the house does wonders for positivity in the dry months.

Do you love a good lawn?
Had a light bulb moment on the mower?
Dried off or still green in your neck of the woods?

Yes I love a good lawn expanse.
Yes I’ve had many light bulb moments on the lawnmower.
I’m struggling to keep a large expanse of lawn green with the sprinkler at the moment …. but I strongly believe in spending the last drop of water on the garden as it’s our little oasis! Trouble is more and more stray livestock have discovered the oasis…..
Your lawn is looking great x

I agree that it would be therapic mowing the lawn and understandably without the ride on mower it would seem impossible to mow. Your muffin recipe looks good and given i made a recipe this week that neither of my kids liked that one goes out the window so might have to give yours a try. I am intrigued about separating the banas’s and also the sharpening the scissors that will also come in handy. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia

The muffin recipe really is the BEST! Well the best I’ve come to perfecting a good muffin. I made some this week as well but with apple and cinnamon instead of berries. Good luck! E x

I mow short, maybe not That short, and am watering watering watering. What do you do when it stops raining? Sprinklers?

Yes the plan is sprinklers, we’ve only been here since April and the previous tenant had sprinklers to keep just a bit around the house green. But we tried to set them up and don’t seem to have enough pressure to use our sprinklers…thinking about getting some wobbletees? They’re apparently the bees knees. We hopefully will have enough rainwater, but we do have bore water for the garden as well.

I love mowing the lawn too. Great thinking time, and a good destress for me. I did ours yesterday. It takes about an hour and a half on a ride on. I didn’t get to do it all though as parts of it are still so wet and boggy (west Gippsland). Your lawns are so lovely. And weed free! How fantastic!! X

West Gippsland unite! I’m originally from Thorpdale and went to school in Warragul (as did my husband, who’s from Neerim South). E x

    Yes.
    Yes.
    Green.

Your lawn is VERY short! Ours is so long and we could literally mow it every day and it would still be long.
